Ionic cable

چکیده
This paper demonstrates a new type of interconnects to fulfill the primary function of axons: transmitting electrical signals over long distances and at high speeds. The interconnect, which we call ‘‘ionic cable’’, uses ions to transmit signals, and is built entirely with soft, elastic materials—elastomers and gels. The ionic cable is highly transparent, and remains functioning after being stretched nearly eight times its original length. We describe the design, theory and experiment of the ionic cable. We show that the diffusivity of signals in the ionic cable is about 16 orders of magnitude higher than the diffusivity of ions. We demonstrate that the ionic cable transmits signals up to 100 MHz over 10 cm, and transmits music signals over meters. The ionic cable transmits enough power to turn on lightemitting diodes. Our theory shows that the ionic cables scale well, suggesting tremendous opportunities to create miniaturized ionic circuit. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Time Stepping for the cable equation, Part 1: Serial performance
Electrical propagation (action potentials) in excitable tissue, such as nerve cells and cardiac myocytes, is described by a parabolic diffusion-reaction equation for the transmembrane potential (voltage) V (x, t), known as the cable equation. It is driven by a rapidly varying, highly nonlinear (and expensive to evaluate) ionic source term Iion(V, t) representing the total ionic current across t...
متن کاملGeneralized cable theory for neurons in complex and heterogeneous media.
Cable theory has been developed over the last decade, usually assuming that the extracellular space around membranes is a perfect resistor. However, extracellular media may display more complex electrical properties due to various phenomena, such as polarization, ionic diffusion, or capacitive effects, but their impact on cable properties is not known. In this paper, we generalize cable theory ...
متن کاملFrom Three-Dimensional Electrophysiology to the Cable Model: an Asymptotic Study
Cellular electrophysiology is often modeled using the cable equations. The cable model can only be used when ionic concentration effects and three dimensional geometry effects are negligible. The Poisson model, in which the electrostatic potential satisfies the Poisson equation and the ionic concentrations satisfy the drift-diffusion equation, is a system of equations that can incorporate such ...
متن کاملMembrane ionic current of the propagated action potential. A new method.
Since HODGKIN et al. (1949) first recorded membrane ionic currents by the technique of voltage clamping the membrane of squid giant axons, it has been possible to predict precisely the ionic currents produced by an action potential. However, the ionic current produced during the propagating action potential can be obtained only after intricate experiments and laborious calculations. Employing t...
متن کاملTime Stepping for the cable equation, Part 2: Parallel performance
In this Part 2 of our work, we continue the discussion on time-steppers for the cable equation, modeling action potential propagation in cardiac myocyte cells. Here we report results from parallel computations. The cable equation is a diffusion-reaction PDE for transmembrane voltage, whose reaction (source) term depends on several voltage-dependent quantities (gates), each satisfying a first or...
